    Faccio fatica a scegliere ...

"The Cartoonist of 'sta Ceppa,' Life Master of All the Good Ones July 3, 2023 - 06:00

The famous cartoonist, sales and streaming star, known as the 'last intellectual of Italy,' has now become a guru.

Avatar by Luigi Mascheroni Luigi Mascheroni 20

The cartoonist of 'sta Ceppa,' life master of all the good ones Yes, yes, right. There is no right-wing culture. True. But what about the left-wing culture? Today, it has been reduced to two good-hearted LGBT-themed jokes, widespread fascist-compulsive journalistic obsessions, the reduced Turin version of the Book Fair, Massimo Giannini's editorials, and Zerocalcare's centrosocial comic strips. Marx and stripes, as titled with a rare lack of self-ridicule by the weekly magazine L'Espresso (for which he collaborates): 'Zerocalcare, the last intellectual of Italy.' The penultimate one was Tommaso Zanello, also known as Er Piotta. Better that way...

The best of the worst among the whining left-wing youth, branded hoodies and politically engaged shorts, forty years old and still complaining that the system is to blame, Zerocalcare with a million comics sold, is the timeline apotheosis of the acquiescent nihilism of a sad generation. I'm from Centocelle, I'm poor, I used to live off translations, we're unlucky... Er Secco, Tor sta Ceppa, stop motion, feeling sorry for oneself, being bitter, the migrants that no one wants to take in, and that damn armadillo. Enough.

AD Alright, but who is this Zerocalcare?

A cartoonist, a satirist, a conformist non-conformist of popular thought, a genius, a great artist, 'My father, my brother, my cousin,' a guru, 'No bullshit,' an idol, a depressed person, a communist piece of shit, a life master. Fan-style post: 'I just finished Zerocalcare's new series and I already miss it.' With a heart.

A left-wing heart and the right codified only as a gathering of Colle Oppio's Nazis, Zerocalcare, Zero to his friends, Michele Rech by birth name, a name he repudiates due to its annoying similarity to the notorious Reich - 'Ein Volk, ein Rech, ein Führer' - incidentally born in Arezzo but Roman, speaking in Romanesco dialect and a rebellious punk from Rebibbia-Ponte Mammolo, he is the biggest cultural and editorial phenomenon of the 2000s, far beyond the world of comics. Down with the hood. No one sells like him, few have so many admirers, and his signing sessions are the longest in signing session history, which he undergoes with exemplary generosity. It's both a business and a passion. Since he published his first comic book, "La profezia dell'armadillo," in 2011, he has only known reprints and successes, culminating in the triumphs of the two animated series he wrote and directed for Netflix, "Strappare lungo i bordi" and "Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo," even though they make us envious. Zero is the graphic novel's Messiah for his fans: inimitable, unreachable, untouchable. Souls and bodies have faith in him. To give you an example: there is a video online of an interview where a girl asks him something, and he replies, 'What the hell do I know?' and a six-minute ovation follows. As for the detractors, few and all fascist ('Give them to the Nazis!'), Zerocalcare, with weak lines and strong themes, is rather an enigma. 'Alright, Rebibbia Quarantine was cool, but the two Netflix series are definitely boring,' yet another example of how mediocrity at the service of the system is praised for being mediocre. 'If you lower the bar, you end up with someone like Zerocalcare being compared to Miyazaki.' Forget the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis.

Anyway, as a journalist's duty, we watched the first episode of "Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo" with enthusiasm. It lasts 30 minutes. Plot: Zero and his friend Secco, always speaking with a slurred accent, then tearing down shitty posters about ethnic replacement, mocking white, heterosexual, cisgender males, denouncing the closing of reception centers, blaming the Nazis ('Get it: fascist is too little'), explaining with the metaphor of packages (wow!) that those arriving from Libya are human beings like us, Netflix-branded Easter eggs, and subliminal messages about Gramsci's "Letters from Prison" and sour cherry gelato. Beautiful. Really. But before moving on to the second episode, we illegally downloaded Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will."

The triumph of ready-to-think benevolence, guilty feelings (question: guilty of what?), emotional fragility of psychology students who've taken too long, praise of the straight-edge life - no smoking, no alcohol, no drugs, no TAV, no war, and no logo (but yes to Netflix and Nike) - Zerocalcare, a simple, altruistic, and kind guy, has perfectly assumed the role of a resistor. He proudly chose to stay where he started, Rebibbia, beyond the Roman suburbs, between Via Bartolo Longo and Ponte Mammolo, a proudly anti-fascist stronghold with militant murals, the martyrs of the Naples '94 ultras, the posters of Franca Salerno, the penitentiary and Pasolini's house - 'Ah, days of Rebibbia/ that I thought were lost in a light/ of necessity, and that I now know so freely' - turning Romanesco dialect into a refined young and antagonist koiné, a national-televised political Esperanto with which to dramatize the delusions, hopes, and demands of that world there, between dreams of coexistence, emancipation, integration, and the constant nightmare of the neo-fascist rise. Laziness, social conflicts, and laziness. And now, let's go get some ice cream.

Zerocalcare's talent is not in drawing, and it is disrespectful (to Paz) to compare him artistically to Paz. But his narrative ability is undeniable. With a handful of Staedtler markers, he is incredibly skilled at depicting a generation that doesn't fit well in the world, a generation that has lost hope, rights, desires, and words, replaced by emojis and asterisks. But the title 'Hands off Zerocalcare's Romanesco: Gadda said so' was absurd. And making him the maître à penser of the new left is a political mistake.

Zerocalcare's political battles: against the 41 bis prison regime and for Alfredo Cospito; in favor of mutualism against individualism; supporting the rights of Kurdish women in Rojava and against the eviction of squatted houses; advocating for free whipped cream on ice cream (because we're not in Milan) and against Alain De Benoist, 'a beacon for European neo-Nazis.'

Zerocalcare's guardian angels of the 'chittesencula': Prof. Christian Raimo, Vinicio Capossela, and Sabina Guzzanti. Makkox (Zero on Zoro). The student who used the schwa sound in the high school essay. Well, those who bought the Mattarella t-shirt in the style of Metallica. Elly Schlein (who always reads him). Repubblica, which interviews him every five to six days. Zerocalcare's little girls on Twitter: 'We like him because he makes us know that life sucks.' And Valerio Mastandrea, extremely likable and politically aligned with that dimension. Once, he even took the blame for the 'antifa' graffiti on the walls of San Lorenzo. Everything is connected.

In the end, Zerocalcare encompasses everything, and that is the secret of his success. A touch of conformism, a fill of sentimentality, a shade of cunning, then everything is colored with Photoshop and good feelings, and finished with militancy. And so Zero by name and millions of fans, Michele Rech is liked by boys, moms, comic book fans, Saviano and Veltroni, the Roman hardcore punk scene, democratic festival professors, mainstream television of struggle and propaganda, and streaming giants like Netflix. Share: 100%.

But perhaps we shouldn't dare to criticize Zero?! He's right: 'Only those who truly have the credentials can open their mouth.'

But above all, his friend Secco is right: 'When someone annoys me, they annoy me for at least two hundred years.'
